WINTER PROTECTION

We now have frost cloth for retail sale!!

The temperatures are dropping and you aren't sure how to protect your plants, or even which ones need protection.  Here are some tips to ensure the health of your plants:
  • Houseplants should all come in when temperatures dip below 50 degrees at night.  Don't move plants in and out daily; if they come in they should stay in one spot for the rest of the winter.  Protect plants from drafts, vents and spray from household cleaning products.
  • Outdoor plants need minimal care through the winter.  Tender plants or plants with flower buds (blooms that are about to open), blooms, or soft new growth can be covered during hard freezes or frosts.  The most important consideration is that the covering needs to come into contact with the ground, completely blocking outside air from the plant.  This allows radiant heat from the ground to warm the plant.  All pots should be in contact with the ground (i.e. not on stands or benches.)  Homeowners can use sheets, light blankets, heavy trashbags, frost cloth or landscape cloth.  The colder the temperatures, the thicker the material.
  • Most outdoor plants will make it through the winter with no extra protection.  During  very hard freezes, it helps to give everything a good watering, especially container plants.  The water freezes and holds the soil temp at 32 degrees.
